Artist Statement
As an artist, I am I fascinated by and drawn to the basic geometric shapes that surround us in everyday life. My art is largely abstract and geometric—my work plays with symmetry and asymmetry, mechanical and organic shapes, and I primarily use sharply delineated edges and bright, contrasting colors presented on large, horizontal canvases. My background in graphic design allows me to develop my ideas on the computer first. Through this process I am able to freely explore color and composition in a standardized visual system of recurring objects before ever touching the canvas. The evolution of a preliminary idea will often change when it is translated to the canvas; my process with oil paint and wax, applied with a palette knife, adds a tactile element that is absent from the initial computerized composition. My goal is to draw in and surprise viewers with the rich colors and textures used to depict these otherwise standard shapes.
